when I ask her if she wants to hang out at Starbucks I use 遊びませんか

I recommend using http://www.j-talk.com/nihongo/ for doing conversion from Japanese characters to Romaji. It seems to me that Romaji is much too ambiguous for us to be using it to explain things.

The site (correctly) translates 遊ぶ to "asobu" and 遊びませんか (nearly correctly) to "asobi mase n ka". I would have written it as "asobimasen ka," but then I've never been taught Romaji in school...

Oh yes, Rikaichan is awesome and should be recommended, although I don't think it does Romaji.

First, that "date" line is most likely too foward and direct for any girl you first meet. The thing about Japanese girls is (most) like to play the slow game. It'll take about 2 weeks before you are really where you want to be if you work at it and can hang out a lot.

Heres my plan. First, get an idea of something to do. I don't usually say "lets hang out" unless im too busy to hang out with a girl in the near future. Otherwise think of something FUN you can go do together. Play up the gaijin angle, they are diggin it anyway. Do whatever it is you think is fun. Hell, some girls even just want to drink, and you can have a relationship with them based purely on drinking together (and what comes next).

お名前聞いてない　- I haven't heard your name...
ケイタイ持ってる？- Do you have a cell phone?

Get that cell phone number and set up something fun and the rest is gravy.


Edit: I I forgot the iceing. If you can't think of anything fun to do just say, "Maybe you could teach me Japanese and we could study together" or something along those lines. They know Japanese, you are learning Japanese, that's an instant connection and way to get inside their social bubble (that at the moment has you as a stranger, not a friend/study friend). After that it's up to you where you want to take it. Get a bunch of different girls to hang out and study with, then pick the one you like the best and turn on that western charm and *BAM* you got a girlfriend.

Hm in english this means somthing like "Do you want to drink a coffee with me"


"Namae"-chan wa, kōhī o nomimasen ka.

Is this right like this?

I think that if you wanted to specify/emphasize the 'with me' you would want to add 'issho ni'; also, you would not want to use -chan if you were not very close to the person (even then it may still be inappropriate depending on the kind of people involved, I am not very familiar with -chan). I also think that if you are going to directly address the person with their name but are asking a question like this, the 'wa' is not necessary, but I may be incorrect.

So yes, something like, (wish I had kana at work) 'Namae, issho ni koohii o nomimasen ka?'

You could complex it up a bit maybe with something like 'Issho ni koohii o nomi ni ikimasen ka?' - Wouldn't you like to go out with me to get some coffee?

it has a sound of uncertainty. and i dont know how to express that in japanese. i think you should be more direct anyway. how does this sound?

or if you are already standing in　front of a cafe
