RPG Game to Learn Japanese

Postby Magzimum » May 4th, 2011 10:24 pm

Hello guys, it's been a while.

I have been working on my own RPG game for people to learn Japanese. My objective is for people to have fun while learning Japanese vocabulary. A friend of mine is working on the music while another one helps with coding. I take care of the graphics (I used Zelda as a reference for the tree which will probably end up being changed as the similarity is too great).

It's kind of a like a mix of Earthbound (for those of you who are familiar with the game) and a typical flashcard software.

This is a short video (about a minute long) to give you an idea about the concept and the look of the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C7RQkYh3Ts

I'm basically sharing this because I'd like to know if some of you would be interested into playing something like this (the game is free as well).

Each weapon and armor in the game has a pool of vocabulary words linked to it if you will. Weakest weapons will have simple words to romanize while more powerful weapons have more advanced vocabulary.
This isn’t shown in the video but you also get to type in words when you are attacked (paper Mario style). Getting a high combo for defense will increase your armor % (and thus reduce the damage you are receiving).

Finally, there are special attacks. Those techniques have a combo requirement and also have their own pool of words. For instance, a technique called shock is a level 3 technique. A combo of three correct answers or more is required to cast the spell, otherwise if fizzles.

So basically, the more words you know, the more powerful weapons and techniques you can use. Learning will basically need to take place eventually as players who hold on to weak weapons and armors won’t be able to progress further into the game.

This looks like a lot of fun lol. I'd definitely be interested in playing it.

I'm interested in how advanced this actually gets. Is it just Hiragana? Or will Katakana and Kanji be included as well? Also is the vocabulary limited to single words, or will it start included more complex phrases or simple but complete sentences?

I'm just learning my Hiragana now and it seems like fun practice.

Also, one recommendation for the game, improve the grpahics for the battle sequence. Instead of only showing the enemy, show both yourself and the enemy (think pokemon or final fantasy for ideas). Just looks nicer in my opinion but it's just a suggestion so do with it what you will :)

That sounds like an awesome idea. :D There have been quite a few rpgmaker-esque games for sale on steam recently (Breath of Death VII, Cthulhu Saves the World), so a FREE game like that, which was also a language learning experience, I'd imagine would be very well received.

This game looks awesome. The sense of humor looks great for all ages with a classic japanese RPG feel and sound. This would definately be a great way to learn to read the language. I look forward to seeing how it ends up.

Gah, I was never notified of replies by email! Sorry for the late reply.

Hiragana, Katanaka and vocabulary words. No plans for full sentences yet.

Also, one recommendation for the game, improve the grpahics for the battle sequence. Instead of only showing the enemy, show both yourself and the enemy (think pokemon or final fantasy for ideas). Just looks nicer in my opinion but it's just a suggestion so do with it what you will

Okay, I'll consider it. Personally speaking I prefer the Dragon Quest perspective. What about the rest of you guys, what do you think?

May i ask if there is a release date and where to find the download link.

No release date so far unfortunately. I'm working on this in my free time and that's not saying much lately. Still, I'm progressing little by little. I might set up a donation system as that would allow me to spend less time at my real job and spend more time working on this project.

UPDATE!

I have a new video of the development on Slimongo. I hope you like it. Let me know what you think, I'm always open to new ideas.

Click here to watch the new video.

I agree with the battle style needing some changes, such as battle backgrounds and zoom out alittle on the enemy to lessen the pixalation. Also a nice looking HUD to show your health and the enemy health it would be nicer and easyer to monitor a fight.

im also interested if when you level up do you get more time to type the anwers in battle.

im glad to hear a reply, i thought that this project was dead for awhile.
