Most gameboy games only use kana, and even with the newer games you can sometimes choose between kana or kanji; it's a method that really works for me. It improves reading speed and comprehension, because usually the sentences in games are pretty short (Story-driven RPGs not taken into account)
However, sometimes the screen is a bit too small to figure out what it was supposed to say.
Like for instance, what does the kanji say in the yellow part? Can anyone help me out?

) and it was a lot of fun. It's quite amazing how diverse the characters personalities are in Japanese compared to English. Cloud even has something of a catchphrase that never made the translation. I really recommend trying the original versions of your favourite Japanese games if you can.
