Learning with Games

Postby aephion » March 16th, 2011 11:17 am

I've come up with an idea recently, and that is to improve my reading skills with japanese games :D
Most gameboy games only use kana, and even with the newer games you can sometimes choose between kana or kanji; it's a method that really works for me. It improves reading speed and comprehension, because usually the sentences in games are pretty short (Story-driven RPGs not taken into account)

However, sometimes the screen is a bit too small to figure out what it was supposed to say.

Like for instance, what does the kanji say in the yellow part? Can anyone help me out?

わたしたち 人間は
仲良く らしているの!

暮らす (くらす). The mixture of the context of the sentence and the general shape of the character give it away, so you'll have less of these problems as your familiarity with the language improves. I played FFVII in Japanese (with awesome OpenGL2 graphics no less ) and it was a lot of fun. It's quite amazing how diverse the characters personalities are in Japanese compared to English. Cloud even has something of a catchphrase that never made the translation. I really recommend trying the original versions of your favourite Japanese games if you can.

Thank you very much! I've been looking all over for that kanji, but I simply couldn't find it because I couldn't count the strokes properly :)
I wouldn't have thought Cloud were a catchphrase guy :o I love FF8, I should probably play that one in Japanese then :)

He always said 興味ないね. If you have a half decent graphics card (mine isn't anything special), you can get PSX games looking pretty sweet if you mess around with epsxe. Laguna's legs would look like a set of stairs using the original engine...

Me? I usually play some form of RPG. Action games are no good, since they have little to no real text in them - So lately I've been playing a lot of Pokémon; those sentences are particularly short, but you still need to read them to be able to progress in the game :)
