Translation help please, "なんだかんだ”

Postby kepompong » July 22nd, 2009 4:34 am

This is probably a stupid grammar question, but anyway
Here's the sentence:
何だかんだ言って優しいよね

I looked up nanda kanda in dictionary and it comes out as "this and that" ("areya koreya") but it still threw me off the grammar even though it seems simple.
So my attempt at translating that is "Saying this and that, you're kind" but it doesn't sound right...

Is "何だかんだ言って" suppose to be a set phrase or something?

Thank you in advance.

なんだかんだ, 何だかんだ or 何だ彼だ in kanji, means あれこれ or いろいろ.

何だかんだ言って優しいよね
No matter what you say, you are kind.
Although you say one thing or another, you are kind.
You say all that jazz, you are kind though.
