for introductions, i think including the "t" sound is important. then when the closeness is there, when things become less formal, you might say that dropping the "t" is fine.

マリケがいいよ。 ("mary-kay" is good.)
or even マリがいいよ。 ("mary" is good.)

yea.. just install the asian language support for winxp. its in the regional settings in control panel. you'll need your winxp cd though.

for enika, i'm assuming its pronounced eh-ni-ka, which the katakana would look something like エニカ

i'm having trouble with yran though. is it pronounced like the country iran? if it is, then the katakana would look something like イラン

i'm not sure how a german "z" sounds like... but if its a hard "z", then it probably shud be ジャ almost like a "j" sound. if its a soft "z" like in "zoo", then you'll probably wanna use ザ in its place. so its either ラリジャ (ra-ri-jya) or ラリザ (ra-ri-za)

For Alexander, it depends on how the "x" sounds. if it sounds like a "z", then you might wanna replace the "sa" with a "za". if its an "s" sound, then you're spot on.

In Alexander the pronunciation is [a-lek-san-dar] (actualy, the last "a" is like "u" in "up" but it`s not so important)

i could only find "hari" for "zhang". i can't find any translation for "huan", which means "like" (xi huan) or "happy" (huan le). if anyone knows, please share. i'll keep looking though.

It's my girlfriends name. She is from Ireland, hence the 'á' and 'é' but you can get away with them being an English 'a' and 'e'.

Thanks, I am starting to see the pattern in prnouncing names in Katakana - just trying to work out how to covert it (where you would use the I's the O's and the U's)
For isntance "Puro Sakka Rigu" sounds more similar to the English leteral translation then how it is written.

yea for Pro Soccer League. =D you're definitely getting it. 'cept you might wanna extend the "i" in Rigu because "league" sounds like the "ea" is dragged.

then again, most of japanese is context-based so if the conversation is generally about soccer, you could almost always get away with "rigu" for league.
