Hi. I go by Pat in English but my full name is Patrick. Would that be Patorikku? (That's what one website told me, another site said something completely different but I like the sound of Patorikku). Also, my cat's name is Margeaux Pritchard so what would that be? (I'm not joking)

Yeah. Like in the Fitzpatrick above. But just Pat would be patto.

That's a joke, right? :P

help and my name in Japanese

Postby canimina » December 21st, 2008 11:28 am

Hi everybody,

I'm a new student! That is, I'm finding some difficulties regarding the hiragana writing. I suppose there must be some rules but I couldn't find any specific information on this site. Well for the listening part, using my ipod and with time and patience I can memorize new words.

I would also like to know how my name in Japanese is: Silvia Borge.

Thanks for everything and have a nice afternoon!

Silvia, Rome.

I guess it's been awhile since I've done names around here:

I'm not 100% certaion of the pronunciation of your name, but my closest approximation is this:
ディミター・イバイロブ・ネーノブ
dimitaa ibairobu neenobu

It takes time to learn these things well, and with kana the only real way to do it is through constant repetition. However, there is a simple progression you can follow:

1. Learn what all of the big symbols are (there are 96 in all)
2. Learn how the double-dash and circle markings alter some of the sounds.
3. Learn how the smaller versions of the symbols combine with the large ones.
4. Practice a bunch.

With proper study it doesn't take very long to memorize the symbols, however it does take several months of continuous reading practice to do it with any amount of speed. Just go easy with yourself-- consistency is more important than intensity. Anyway, your name is:

シルビア ボーグ
shirubia bougu

Hello!

My name is Stephanie. I'm guessing that in Japanese, it's something like ステフニ but since I'm fairly new to the language I probably messed it up pretty badly  I'd just like to know if I got it right and if not, what my name actually is. Please and thanks :)

The common spelling would be ステファニー (su-te-fa-ni-i), so you were close. Granted, there are no hard rules to converting names, so you have some freedom there.

I'm not sure how I missed this reply. Thankfully, Cyrillic was my first foreign alphabet. It doesn't render well into Japanese, but from my message above, the only thing I would change is the first name: ディミタール

Hey guys!

I am just starting to learn Japanese, I lived in Yokosuka for 3 years when I was younger. Unfortunately I was too young to appreciate the experience as much as I would now. I am going to try to learn as much as I can to be at least conversationally adept by the time I go back in a few years.

I wonder if you guys could help me say & write my name. It is Alicia Payne (I go by Ali) It is pronounced ah-lee-cee-ah Pay-n if that helps. From what I have gathered on the wwwjdic site it is written ペインアリシア (you put the last name first, right?) but I have no idea how to pronounce it. Any help is appreciated.

Hi every one, how can I write my name:
Azzoz Al-Hasani
It's Arabic, there is a little hold on the first Z, and extended vowel O.

Thank you

Pretty much the same, though typically you'd take the "si" part as "shi":
アリシア・ペイン
arishia pein

ナッセール アル ドード
nasseeru aru doodo

This one is tricky. It's not a typical kana spelling, but it's the closest I could get to your pronunciation:
アッゾーズ アル ハサニー
azzoozu aru hasanii

As always, there are no strict rules for these transliterations, merely trends. If you find a spelling you prefer or you feel is more accurate, by all means adopt it.

Happy studies, everyone. :D
