The Japanese word is ローマ字 (roomaji), but I suppose the long vowels get lost like in Tokyo and Kyoto when converted to English.

The best bet is to avoid using the cursed stuff so we don't need to refer to it

This is just more proof that rouma-ji is evil.

I hear romanji used as the description all the time here (Japan) - propbably the evil foreign influence!

Yup, people should learn to use a dictionary. Romaji is in there.

I noticed some people write that too
I thought it was a variation, but the dictionary doesn't lie

It would be nice if we could block romaji from the site :kitty: :kitty: :kitty:

wow, if a little misspelling is a peeve...

relax, adopt a more zen attitude to it all.

Now if you want some peeves,
the way people quote whole posts and nested quotes....
and overuse of emoticons (to be :) or not to be :( ,that is the question :?: ... Shakespeare could have done with a bit of technology to express himself clearer. )
but 十人十色 and :zen attitude: (or is :taoist attitude: what I'm after? the achy legs thing is a little... )

actually romanji is in Edict. pointing out the misspelling.
ロマンジ (n) romanji (misspelling of "romaji")
it's an easy mistake.

Enough people use it and it’s a valid usage. Language changes that's the beauty of it prehaps. There are worse acquired mis-usages in English at any rate but at least this has the logic of roman-ji.

Maybe they are talking about romantic characters. ロマン字、愛、恋、桜、美、(^.^)

"Sure! Keep the distinction!"

... is what I say. I find it's a good way to sift out (speaking of peeves) those certain special types who pretend to know far more than they actually do.

markystar-san,

I think you should take action.

As you have admin status you can do two things.

A search and replace on the entire database of 15 thousand plus posts.
(probably my own misspellings among them.)
Although this thread would read very strangely then.

Then using the same parsing that puts the emoticons in or redacts bad language in other BBS systems you can automatically save people from misspelling romaji.

rather than curse the darkness light a candle

and now to go on to solve world hunger....

含み笑い

i'd have to find a way to fix it in real life too. a friend of mine always says roman-ji too and i've tried to break him of the habit... but alas, all is in vain

For your next miracle, how about putting an end to those who always spell "konnichi wa" in kanji? World hunger can wait!
