"kedo" - What does it mean?

I hear this ALL the time. Can anyone tell me what is means?

From my understanding (I'm no where near the level as others on this board), it translates to "but", "still", "although", any of those words that come when you have an exception to a statement you made. I understand it as the orginal of the particle も

to add on to Fedgrub, it is usually used to change the direction of the conversation...

for example,
いぬが　だいすきですけど　となりのいぬわ　あまりすきじゃない。
i like dogs, but i don't like my neighbour's dog.

the initial direction was "i like dogs", then "kedo" changes it to "don't like dogs".

another example,
すしが　だいすきですけど　そらわ　あまり。。。
i like sushi but that one....

and you can imagine the rest of it...

You should keep in mind that けど is pretty informal. It's short for the more formal けれど and けれども.

That's a new one on me, but then again I'm not an expert in the origins of particles.
