oh wow i needed this. to see others hand writing. thanks!

my handwriting when writing with roman letters is... piss poor, and yeah you can guess how poor my handwriting is when i try to write japanese.

only other hand writing ive seen is a cursive styled handwriting. every kanji that usually have horizontal lines are tilted a little.

about handwriting. to understand other peoples handwriting in japanese is not any different from roman letters. its all about how many different types of handwriting you have seen before and how often you see it.

when learning japanese through the internet you dont have access to any handwriting. you dont get to read any other handwriting. you only have the different fonts on the computer and your own handwriting is probably very textbookish.

but you learn textbookish handwriting when you are a kid and develop your own handwriting after awhile.

I can't speak for Japanese handwriting, but as far as Chinese goes, if you use my 'neatness' as a standard, there are plenty of people who write worse than me, and at the same time plenty who write much more conscientiously. If you go to a Chinese medical hall, the people who write the ingredients lists are almost writing calligraphy (i.e. very quick and very rough). Ultimately it's all for communication; as long as your reader understands your writing, it's all good.

Thank you your right good luck on your writing/studies! 8)

Here's a copy of my handwriting. It probably could be a lot better if I took my time. Sorry I couldn't get it any smaller.

Forgot to add, I know I wrote 私 wrong, but I was too lazy to fix it.

This is really helpful! I don't like the way my kana handwriting looks. It looks fake. When I was in high school I tried to copy a kanji and the girl laughed and said I was drawing it, not writing it. I think my Japanese handwriting is still like that too. A bit of the right kind of messiness would be good.

All you need to do is click on it and it'll open it bigger for you, it's actually kind of large so I thought a thumbnail preview would be best, that way it didn't make the forum page really wide.

This is a question I've had since I started learning kana. Handwriting in my native English varies wildly. In a quickly written note the letters often only vaguely resemble their "textbook" form. Is the same thing is true for kana?

Also how important are the "tails" on the smaller strokes in letters like "i", "ka", "ko", etc? "Tail" may not be descriptive enough but I'm talking about the little bit at the end where the stroke reverses or changes direction. My hand naturally tries to turn these strokes into just dashes or straight lines.

What do you mean by "tails"?

If it's what I think you mean, then no, lol -- they aren't required, they are just created by the picking up of the pen when moving from one stroke to the next.

I've handwritten the text, but I don't know how to put it in here.
One of my teachers writes the kanji in some kind of shorthand. It's more like gyousho calligraphy. I'm learning kaishou first. We are in a class with different levels. The more advanced students learn gyousho. It looks really cool. (While I'm writing 記 a hundred times.)
I found a website which explains the different forms of calligraphy:
http://www.takase.com/Library/Glossary.htm#SOUSHO

And by the way, kanji are not square. They (could) fit in a square. Just like the written kanji for 'mouth'. If my teacher hears someone calling this kanji square he starts yelling 'it's a flowerpot!' or something like that...
O, and we are not allowed to mention or even think about printed letters. I once wrote 'fu' like the printed kana. But my Japanese friend did only recognize it after some hard thinking...

I suppose I might do better if I tried it on ruled paper, but oh well. Readable but not pretty:

I had the same situation, I bought a manga and it answered lots of my questions!
