"Tanosikattayo" wa Eigo de nan desu ka

Postby WalterWills » May 23rd, 2007 11:47 am

Hajimemashite!

I have recently started to learn Japanese. I have a book, and this great website. I also have a Japanese penpal (kind of) who speaks to me in both Japanese and English. Every now and then he'll write a word which I cannot translate anywhere.

"tanosikattayo!!"

Does anyone know? Thanks.

One day I'd like to speak fluent Japanese. It seems quite hard. The grammatical structure is very different to English and there seems to be a lot of words- where in English we might have several words which makes a phrase, in Japanese they have one word for a whole phrase. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Perhaps I might try to learn Japanese script too- if I could ever do that it would be a grand achievement!

tanoshikatta yo means "it was fun!"

tanoshikatta is the past plain form of tanoshii, which is the form you'd find in the dictionary if you wanted to look up the word.

yo is a sentence ending particle that is used to express strong feeling or emotion or even emphasis. Sometimes it helps to think of yo as a verbal exclamation point.

Hope that helps.
