Clothes in Japan( has anyone bought any?)

Hello! I was wondering if anyone has bought any male clothes in Japan. I'm trying to figure out the size of the shirt and what that would be the equivalent to in Australian sizes. I know Americans go by inches but here we go by cms. I tried looking through google but came up with nothing. I don't have a tape measure or anything and not quite sure how to measure myself.

Japan is also metric based, so clothing is in cm there, so should be similar to Australia. I have only bought shoes while living there, and they were all in cm.

Their shirt sizes (S,M,L) are effectively a size smaller IMO. Not that they vary from the American sizes by too much, but they have a tighter fit to them so they are effectively a size smaller unless you're super skinny.

a lot of stores will have a chart with the cm size next to the S,M,L, LL, 3L

An Aussie XL is probably a 3L (or maybe 4L - if you can find them) and go down from there

Even though as everywhere Japanese are getting bigger the sizes available in the stores seem to be getting smaller - has anyone else noticed this?

I bought clothes, eg t-shirts at UniQlo and sizing seemed to be the same as Australia. Size S=small fitted fine, same as Aus. The sales people always checked to confirm the size ｻｲｽﾞ ｴｽ ?

You might be OK at the S end of the spectrum but I am a UK XL and struggle at that end in UniQlo

I'm an XL in the US and the only shirts I found that fit right in Okinawa were 4L and above.
LL seemed closer to a Medium in the US.
3L was maybe a hair smaller than an American Large.

What about length (in jeans, t-shirts etc.)? I could probably fit into Japanese larges, but I'm more concerned that any shirts I buy will stop at my belly button.

My clothes were a lot longer than they were wide.
I mean, eventhough they'd be as narrow as a medium, length wise, they were about as long as a large, if that makes sense.
Pretty sure 1 inch = 2.54cm so just remember that conversion when you go over there.

In the Netherlands, that's very small for a woman. But a Japanese friend of mine who is exactly the same height, says in Japan that's very big. She can't find nice clothes her size. So, before she returns, she's going to buy loads of clothes, (which are here size S or M).

My wife is 165cm which is apparently tall for Japanese - she also has quite broad shoulders so she is very grateful for my business trips to Hong Kong or she buys on the internet from UK and US.

I know I have said it before but the Japanese are getting taller and larger but the clothes in the shops seem to be getting smaller...
