te-ageru question

my brain isn´t working at the moment, could someone confirm this please?

watachi wa (nani) hajimete oshiete kuremashta.
This is wrong, yes? It has to be .... oshiete moraimashta because I need the giver as a subject. Like so:

sensei wa watachi ni (nani) wo oshiete kuremashta.

I seem to have blanked out about why "oshiete kuremashta" isn´t possible when I receive something!

sensei ni nani wo oshiete moraimashita.　

先生が何を教えてくれました。
sensei ga nani wo oshiete kuremashita.


watashi (ha/ga or ni) is assumed in these sentenced, can include them, but not necessary.

Thanks for confiming! I thought I had this all sorted but sometimes my old brain forgets

So, it has to be someone else as the subject for te-kureru, yes? I can´t use for myself? Was that it?

I can´t translate as in the English "I was given"?

usagi-san,

yeah "te kureru" is used when: "someone does something for me" (requested or as a favor, etc...) You can be the subject for "moraimasu/agemasu" but "kureru" is someone elses action for you.

It can be very confusing, kuremasu/agemasu/moraimasu, really can make you stop and think.. I have messed it up in the past, making it look like I gave something, when I really recieved it haha... Was a funny situation, but also a learning experience...
