Japanese -na and -i adjectives

Postby lonna_senpai » April 3rd, 2007 11:12 pm

I know a few but there are some I can't find in my Japanese Dictionary.
What are the words for "Jealous" and "irritated" in Japanese?

Also can one say "Oishii mitai" and that means "Looks delicious"?

Arigatoo! If anyone has questions about adjectives please post it here! :P

Oishisou, not oishii mitai. Mitai means more "similar to" than "looks like", so it doesn't make much sense. You can turn any "i" adjective into a word meaning "looks <adjective> by dropping the last "i" and substituting "sou" (EXCEPT kawaii, because kawaisou means pitiable, pathetic) and any "na" adjective by just adding "sou" to the adjective itself.

Jealous has a LOT of words. Envy, or light jealousy, is urayamashii. One of my favorites is yakimochi, which is the word for a cooked rice cake as well. :D I'm surprised your dictionary has none...I find quite a few in several dictionaries, including the one in the learning center here on JapanesePod101 (staff members, take note: I want credit for this sale! :P )

Irritated/to be irritated is iradatsu, but there's many other words, depending on what you mean by it. A sentence would be easier to try to translate than a single word.

Seanolan is absolutely right that it all depends on what kind of 'jealous' or 'irritated' you want to express.
Even so, there are two very commonly used words:

嫉妬する (shitto suru) = Jealous
Excuse me for being crude but I found this one immediately memorable by just thinking of the English *ahem*
'sugar!' you have something I don't.

いらいらする (iraira suru) = Irritated
This one was also dead easy to remember as all the letters 'iraira' can be found in 'irritated'.

I didn't write a sentence because alot of -i adjectives can be used on there own.
One can say "Kawaii!" and it just means "Cute". I was just tryng to think of single word sentences I could say. Like if I was jealous of a friend's new handbag I could just say in Japanese, "Jealous."

I was thinking of やきもちbut that more relates to people than objects. 妬ましい (netamashii) might do the trick.
