XP does have Japanese handwriting recognition built into it's IME. The problem is you have to draw a character and then pick from a list of possible matches to insert the character. It's not the type of handwriting recognition where you just write words and it inserts them into the program for you. It's really only useful for looking up kanji you don't know the reading for. It's not suitable for doing actual writing.

In addition to changing the language to Japanese, you also have to change the input mode to hiragana. See the "Writing in Japanese" link on the page that Harv gave the link for.

It also works on Mac ^^. I learned the space-bar-kanji-finding from a Japanese friend. She's very fast, so first I thought where did those kanji come from? I guess she's also very good at typing on her phone.

すごいよ!

Wow...never thought of removing the English keyboard...that's awesome. The language bar was totally unnecessary, and now it's gone! Woo-hoo. I love this alt-~ functionality.

If the Japanese IME won't install (which it wouldn't on mine), njstar.com has some nice programs to type Japanese on pretty much any computer. Unfortunately it's at a really steep price after the 30-day trial, but it's nice while it lasts, and it's cheaper than getting a new computer or operating system just for Japanese.

yeah for the longest time I had JP on my language bar, and I thought there was something fundamentally wrong with my PC because I could never get the Japanese input to work, until I pressed alt+~. duh. haha
