The cat is on the windowsill ??

I want to learn the phrase " The cat is on the window sill " ( over there )

Do you use a series of "no" possessives, as in:

Are wa ( window ) no ( windowsill ) no neko des?

... or is there another word that means " physically located on top of ", as in " the cat is on the mat" ?

You normally say xxxx no ue = xxxx's top

So the right form would be.

are wa ( window ) no ( windowsill ) no ue neko desu

I think the cat is the topic of conversation and thus the sentence should start 'neko wa'.

A bit of research on window sill came up with 'mado no shita waku' (窓の下枠). I'm not 100% sure that 下枠 is pronounced 'shitawaku'.
(mado = window; shita = below; waku = frame)

We could say 'neko wa mado no shitawaku no ue desu.'
(The cat is on the top of the windowsill).

This is probably more than you need right now, but there is another way of saying this using the verb 'imasu' (to exist [animate things only]), in which case we can say:
'mado no shitawaku no ue wa neko ga imasu'
(The cat is on the top of the windowsill)
Note that in this case, the topic of conversation is the windowsill, rather than the cat.

I was talking about putting a stick in a windowsill to keep theives out and just used "mado waku". Might work here.
