Appropriate Cost per Lesson

What is the typical going rate for Japanese Language Instruction in your area?

I have been going to the same place for a while now (a Langauge Institute which hires instructors from the local area). It just seems that it is a little pricey for the amount of instruction you get (which is 45 US dollars/(effectively)55 minutes). I say that b/c you have to take into account whether you start/end on time inside the 60 minute window.

I don't know what the cut is for the money, ie. how much goes to the instructor and how much goes to the institute..but it seems this setup is more expensive than finding a tutor yourself and just paying him/her.

I go to evening classes at my uni in the uk. It's £60 each semester (or £75 for non-students) which is about 120 US dollars. We get 12 2 hour lessons, so that's about 5 US dollars/hour. I think private lessons are about equivalent to 20-35 US dollars/hour.

$20-30/hour seems more reasonable for private lessons. If your instructors are trained in Japanese as a second language instructors though, there is probably a good reason they command the higher fee. I would expect for that price that there would be a curriculum provided.
