よい vs. いい

Postby Jordi » February 12th, 2007 4:47 pm

みんな さん こんにちわ

when would one use よい instead of いい? for example,

いい天気ですね。 is alright,

but is
明日はよい天気ですか?

fine?

どうも ありがとう

The main thing to remember is that you cannot conjugate 'ii'. So if you want to say not-good, you have to go with 'yokunai'. Similarly for other conjugations.

As far as directly replacing 'ii' with 'yoi'. It doesn't seem to be usual practice, but I did find some matches with google, so I guess it's Ok.

It's written as...

こんにちは

I don't know how the article 「は」ever came to be pronounced "wa" (or maybe it was the "wa" article that came to be written as 『は』), but don't worry, it rightly confuses beginners.
