How to drink sake

Postby Liz21 » November 29th, 2006 7:19 pm

Hi!
It would be great to have a Culture Class on how to heat sake properly and other tips about drinking sake in general.

I've found this link. Maybe it'll help. I usually gave my sake a warm bath, and the video shows I was correct. :D

this is an old rule, but using your left hand to drink nihonshu is uncouth.

that's about all i know.

Hold it in your right hand. It might feel weird at first.

in old japan, everything was done with the right hand. everyone was expected to be right handed. i heard even today, lefties are a rarity. i don't know if it's genetic or just learned behavior. (i don't have a statistic on this, it was just told to me by a few japanese friends).

there is a famous example in japanese history. the shinsengumi commander, 近藤勇 (Kondo Isami) was shot in his right shoulder. while his wound was recovering, the doctor told him not to use his right arm. before each drinking party he would apologize for his bad manners as he would have to drink with his left hand.

you know in ancient rome, left hand use was also frowned upon.
the latin words for right and left are like this:
dexter (right)
sinister (left)
