Tenting in Japan?

Postby The Frankensteiner » September 13th, 2006 1:36 pm

Hey guys, how common are tenting camp grounds?
Is it a pretty cheap way to get your lodging and see lots of nature?

Also are there any good places for overnight bacjpacking through the wilderness?
Here's a video of my last backpacking trip, I'd like to go on something similar in Japan.

In Hokkaido, there are campgrounds everywhere. Don't know about other places in Japan though. Seen a couple near Aso in Kyushu. Probably some everywhere once you get outside the major cities.

Ooh, nice video. I imagine it was even more beautiful to see in person.

Yes, campgrounds are everywhere, and an extremely cheap option for staying in Japan (most are under 500 yen, and many are free). As the Japanese are proud of telling you, there are four seasons in Japan, and campground availability is definitely seasonal (some- especially in Tohoku and Hokkaido- are only open in the summer months).
