Japanese IME & Windows

Postby animate » September 19th, 2006 10:27 pm

Tech question here--

Is there any way to have the IME become more accessible for Windows users? I can't STAND clicking between kana's and kanji...and then back to English again. I'm aware that Mac users have much less of a hassle when typing in Japanese (they don't even touch the mouse, which is what I'd like). Any help?

I found out by accident that if you type in Japanese and press ctrl-T before pressing space or enter, it turns into English! There might be other similar shortcuts too, probably listed somewhere.

I found this list at www.thejapanesepage.com

* Switch language (e.g. [EN] to [JP]) : <alt>+<shift>
* Hiragana mode : <ctrl>+<capslock>
* Katakana mode : <alt>+<capslock>
* Switch Direct input to Kana (and vice versa) : <alt>+`
* Change selection to KATAKANA : <F7>

Please let me know if they work, and if the ctrl-T works on your computers as well. I'm on a Norwegian keyboard, so things may differ.

Since you can actually input English with the Japanese IME, you can set it to be the default input language. Then all you have to do to switch betwen English (direct input) and Japanese (kana) is press Alt+` (that's the ` next to the number 1 on US keyboards).

Too bad my keyboard is Norwegian... It's hard to write with English settings without seeing where the different keys are supposed to be :P But it's good practice, some programs automatically assume I'm on a US keyboard (some game emulators). Maybe something to do on a rainy day ;)
