I came across this expression in "lower intermediate seanson 1 lesson 16- postcards vi", but as my title suggest I can not properly get the meaning of "したがって", so can anyone pro in japanese explain this to me? お先にありがどうございます。

original text is "結局、ずっと私と結婚したがっていた人のプロポーズを受けました。”

I don't think I'd class myself as "pro in Japanese" but I think the word is the te-form of したがる, meaning to desire or wish to do.
