「回る」、「どうか」

Postby Dariat » April 26th, 2014 3:41 pm

Hi.

I'm having some trouble with this sentence: 「オバマ大統領の飛行機が利用する羽田空港では、警察官が建物を回って変な荷物などがないかどうか確かめています。」

My questions are:

  1. Am I right in assuming that it means something like: "At Haneda Airport, which the airplane of President Obama will use, police officers walk around in the buildings to check that there are no things like strange luggage."?
  2. What's the best way to translate 「回って」 here?
  3. What is the exact meaning and grammatical function of 「どうか」 and how does it relate to the other parts of the sentence?

Help would be much appreciated.

Dariat san,

You are reading newspaper article? Great! :D

Q1 your translation is good.
Q2 回るmeans “trun around, rotate, revole, spin, circle, go around and so on”. In this sentence it means “go or walk around”.
Q3 かどうか is “used to cite or refer to a question”.
For example 何を買うかどうか分からない。
I don’t know what to buy.
In your sentence police is checking “whether strange luggage is there or not”.

I hope it will help.
