Longer sentences.

Postby thegooseking » March 4th, 2014 11:09 pm

みんなさん、こんばんは、

I'm trying to learn how to make longer sentences, using multiple descriptive clauses and so on, so my language doesn't sound so "stop-and-start". To start with, I want to say:-

>> I live on a farm 5km away from a village called Alyth, which is near Dundee.

My guess is:-
ダンディーに近くあるエイリスという村から5キロ離れている農場に住んでいます。
Dandī ni chikaku aru Eirisu to iu mura kara 5 kiro hanarete iru nōjō ni sunde imasu.

I'd appreciate any comments and corrections.

よろしくおねがいします、

由紀先生、

そうですね。ありがとうごあざいます。

I got confused by 近くに. I figured that since 近い is an い-adjective, 近く would be the corresponding adverb, as this is the format for turning most い-adjectives into adverbs. But for some reason it's 近く. Looking it up, it seems that since the "adverbial" form of 近い becomes a noun (meaning 'vicinity'), you still need to add a に to make it an actual adverb.

I guess similar things apply to 遠い, 多い, 早い and 遅い. Dropping the い and adding く gets you a noun where you might expect an adverb, so you need to add に to turn it into an adverb.

I knew there was a に in there somewhere, though, which led to me putting it before 近く.
