I have a question about typing シチイーカレッジ.
シチイーカレッジ is the spelling for City College San Francisco, determined by the Japanese language instructors who have been there forever. As a group of native Japanese speakers, they determined
The Romaji spelling is:
Shiteekarejji
For the most part of the college name, I have little difficulty typing it with Katakana.
Shi becomes シ,
Te becomes テ,
I becomes イ followed by the extension mark ― I don’t understand yet,
Ka becomes カ,
Re becomes レ,
And then it gets difficult.
There is a double-consonant (may be named something else) ツthat appears before the last character, and then the last character itself.
The Romaji spelling ends with JJI.
JJI gives me ッ児, and the drop down menu to select additional characters/spellings.
ッジ　does not appear as an option, so I must accept the default entry, delete the final kanji, and then type du/zu to get ヅ.
My question is:
Is there an easier way to get the final ッジ than by my approach?

Yes, there is.

It helps a lot to know that the Japanese version of roumaji uses two keystrokes for all of the characters except the vowels. They are made of the consonant for the column and the vowel for the row, which is the same as the way we're used to doing except for:-

si (shi)
ti (chi)
tu (tsu)
hu (fu)

For voiced characters you change s to z (za, zi, zu, ze, zo), t to d (da, di, du, de, do), h to b (ba, bi, bu, be, bo).

So the first thing to note is that the character at the end is zi = ジ

To get the small tu that marks double-consonants, you do the same as you always do, which is type the first consonant of the character you want twice. So in this case you type zzi = ッジ.

Oh, thank you, I now see what was wrong.

I was doing it the way you suggested, or trying to, but my keyboard settings were incorrect.

My keyboard settings were for Hiragana, because I do not fully know Katakana yet.

When I changed the keyboard settings to Full-Width Katakana, the proper characters immediately appeared on screen.



I expect to have Katakana fully memorized by the end of the day tomorrow, and at that point it will be a good time to begin learning more about how to use the IME editor and keyboard functions.

one small addition: The second character is chi, not te!
te=テ, chi=チ. They look similar, I'm still struggeling with them.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out... last night I brought a large print out sampling the experience to my Japanese instructor along with a printout of the IME Keyboard options. I wanted to ask about the keyboard options, but she pointed out the exact same error before I could ask my question.

I was going to post an update here noting the error, but you beat me to it.

I hope to have Hiragana completed today, and then I will begin Katakana late tonight or tomorrow. I know that once I start Katakana it will take less than a few days to memorize, especially with the videos available here.

I'm a bit confused! If the roumaji spelling is Shiteekarejji, then the katakana ought to be シテーカレッジ, without the イ after the テ. But if the word is "City" then surely it ought to be シティー, with a little-i after the te (although there is perhaps a little too much comedy potential in that spelling).

But I digress. I just realised what you're doing wrong in the video. Stop hitting the space bar after each character! Just type in　かれっじ and then hit the spacebar. There's no kanji option for that--the only option will be カレッジ.

I'm afraid the problem is me, and this issue is probably because of two things:
1, I do not know Katakana yet and
2, the Microsoft IME interface/editor.

Here's the name of the college from the vocabulary list:


Shitee is my mistake. It should be Shitii.

The instructor said that when it is typed into her Macintosh as plain Romaji spelled as shitiikarejji, then it automatically changes to the correct Katakana.

I tried that, but it didn't work, so I began to press return after each character.

Strangely enough, I was going to prove this by creating a new video. Moments ago, I did two things. I set up the recorder and did a test-typing of the characters before recording. The problem I was experiencing duplicated itself, so I deleted the characters just typed and turned on the recorder to create the demonstration. Next, I began recording, and now an additional pop-up menu appears once I've stopped typing the string of characters. That menu did not appear in the pre-test.

I need to attribute this to user error -- it seems I need to learn how to use the IME interface because different things are happening when I believe I am performing the same actions.

For reasons unknown to me, now it is working like it should be working.

I need to let this little exercise pass for the time being. I'll have most if not all of Katakana memorized by the end of the weekend, and perhaps once I've learned that alphabet I'll get a better grasp of the language interface.

we didn't have the sound of "ti" originally in Japanese, and this was brought from foreign languages.
Accordingly, old Japanese writing (such as some writings on very old buildings) have a uncommon
way of writings such as ヂ for ディ and チ for ティ

The word "city" in katakana word should be シティー as a phonetically transcribed word.
I have no idea about those recording thing, so I'll just give you an advice on typing.
When you type Japanese, like Michael-san advised you, it's better to write a complete word first and
then press the spacebar to change it to katakana.
And, to type little letters like イ in ティ, you can press "L" first and then "I" ("L" for "little" ).
As to small "tsu" like in カレッジ, you can type "jji" with double "J" OR
type [L key] => "tsu" => "ji". Both ways will give you っじ

Oh, and if you need to change any word to katakana, after typining the word or letter, press F7 and it'll
change it to katakana

This is brilliant!!!! I type English while the keyboard is in Japanese very, very, very often.

Also, 「～てみて下さい」 looks very useful! It means "please try <doing something>", right?

Exactly!
We often use ～てみて下さい to encourage someone to try (doing) something.
Sales people would also use this expression a lot. Or, in my case, I might say 「JapanesePod101.com の
7-day free trial を試してみてください」 to hesitating want-to-learn-Japanese people
