Help with short dialogue in Yotsuba To!

Postby mmmason8967 » July 17th, 2013 8:05 am

I'm reading the よつばとmanga and I've come across a piece of dialogue that I don't understand.

The dialogue involves Yotsuba, who is five years old, and her neighbour Fuuka, who is sixteen years old. Yotsuba has forgotten Fuuka's name, so Fuuka tells her that she should try to remember it:「ちゃんとお姉ちゃんの名前おぼえてよ」. The dialogue continues:-

風香っていうの
Fuuka tte iu no

I think this is Fuuka itte (please call me Fuuka) but I don't understand the iu no at the end.

風 香る と書いて。ふ・う・か。
Kaze kaaru to kaite. Fu-u-ka.

Fuuka explains the kanji in her name: write it as 'perfumed breeze'.

わけわかんね
Wake wakan ne

I have no idea what this means although, ironically enough, I suspect it might be something like "I have no idea what this means".

風香っていうの

I think this is just a colloquial contraction of
風香と言うのです。

わけわかんね

わけ from 訳/meaning?
The る ending can be contracted to, err, ん so わかんね could be from 分かるね。And the particle was also probably dropped so the original might have been
訳が分かるね?

What do you think? I'm not at all sure about all this so hopefully someone more knowledgable will come along soon...

Aaaaaah ... so と言う = って言う. Thanks for that!

わけ from 訳/meaning?

Aaaaaah (again) .. that really helps! I think I get it now...

I think it means the opposite, being formed like this: わからない ⇒ わかんない ⇒ わかんね. After I read your thoughts I took a guess and tried typing わかんない into Denshi Jisho and discovered that it's a colloquial version of わからない, so then i tried Googling わかんね and got enough to get the impression that it means something like "I don't get it".

So I now think Yotsuba's 「わけ わかんね」 means "I don't get your meaning" or maybe "I have no idea what you're talking about". Which, if you're five years old, is probably a reasonable reaction if someone says 「かぜかあるとかいて。ふ。う。か。」 to you.

Oh it was よつば not 風香 that said わけわかんね? I didn't twig that; so, yes, I think your explanation is far better.

FWIW the "contraction" of る to ん idea came from http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/colloquial-contractions.html which is a site worth knowing.

マイケルさん、エリックさん、
こんにちは! :D

Wow, brilliant explanation, エリックさん! Thanks!!

わけわかんね is a very colloquial expression for わけがわかりません which we often use
just to say "what are you even talking about?" or "it doesn't make sense at all to me".
Or, even "...what(.)ever..."
(I think this would be the closest translation in this scene)

わけ here roughly means "entire story".
わかりません => わからない=> わかんない => わかんね(え)
In more slangy version, it can be also わっかんねえ
