Japanese has two basic time-related tenses: the past tense describes actions that have been completed and the non-past tense describes things that haven't been completed--things that are habitual, or things that will happen in the future.
The polite non-past of yasumu is yasumimasu. The casual non-past is yasumu.
The polite past of yasumu is yasumimashita. The casual past is yasunda.
If you want to describe something that is happening right now, you use the present progressive form. This is done by using the ~te form of the verb followed by imasu (polite) or iru (casual). The ~te form of yasumu is yasunde, so the present progressive is either yasunde imasu or yasunde iru.
Assuming that I'm talking about myself, I can say:-
yasumu ⇒ I rest, or I will rest
yasunda ⇒ I rested
yasunde iru ⇒ I am resting
yasunde ita ⇒ I was resting
The polite versions are:-
yasumimasu ⇒ I rest, or I will rest
yasumimashita ⇒ I rested
yasunde imasu ⇒ I am resting
yasunde imashita ⇒ I was resting
