Two verb combos

Postby wildjasmin296741 » March 30th, 2013 5:14 pm

こんにちわ,

I often read expressions, or segments which seem to me are the combination of two verbs, for example,

中国へ何をしに行きますか。
あさひ が すいへいせん から でて くる ながめ は すばらしい です
それなら上原さんが教えてくれたお店に行きましょう。

My question is, how do I know which verb can/should go with which verb? Should I just memorize them as fixed pairs when I see them? At least for now at the beginner's stage.

ありがとうございます。

ジャスミンさん、
はい、そのとおりです。You're very right.
All those are combination of two verbs. Don't worry; you'll learn them one by one in our lessons
This kind of combinations is not difficult at all.
For instance,
しに行く: する + 行く ("to do" + "to go")
でてくる: でる + 来る ("to come/go out" + "to come")
教えてくれた: 教える + くれる ("to teach" + "to give something to me")
All of them have two verbs and all the verbs involved keep their meanings, but grammar structures are different.
If you want to say "start doing", "finish doing", and so on, you know you need to use the verbs "to start" and "to finish",
and before those verbs, you can add any verbs with proper form. All those three also work in the same way.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Please feel free to ask any further questions if any

奈津子さん、

Thank you so much for the explanation :ojigi: . Japanese verbs are like legos, there are so many combinations. 難しいですね :(

ジャスミンさん、
どういたしまして :D
It could seem to be difficult now, because it's a very unique language and different from other languages.
But once you get the rules, it's not that bad
