to be

Postby iheartokinawa7436 » February 15th, 2013 8:18 pm

How do you say "I'm going to be in the newspaper"? What is the grammar behind "to be"? How would I apply this in normal day speech?

Well, you wouldn't actually use "to be", instead the verb which means "to appear/to come out" would be more natural.
でます demasu

A simple sentence could be:
わたしのことがしんぶんにでます。
watashi no koto ga shinbun ni demasu.
something about me, in the paper appear.

I'm sure there are other ways of saying it too.

Hope that helps.

iheartokinawa7436-san, エリックsan,
kon'nichiwa! :D

Wow, that's a good question!
Indeed, エリックsan's 「でます」 can be also used, but I think it's used more for TV in simple sentence, like "I'll be on TV".
It depends also "what" and "how" you appear on the newspaper, and also depends on conversation context, but...
新聞に私の記事が載ります。(しんぶんに わたしの きじが のります。shinbun ni watashi no kiji ga nori masu.)
This can be gererally fine for any case.
If you say,
私は新聞に載ります。(わたしは しんぶんに のります。watashi wa shinbun ni norimasu.)
it sounds like decleration. But, if it's about your past and say
私は新聞に載りました。(わたしは しんぶんに のりました。watashi wa shinbun ni norimashita.)
It's very natural phrase, since you're stating the fact.

When you use 私の記事 or similar thing, verb in the sentence can be 出ます or 書かれます other than 載ります
Grammar in Japanese here is very "direct" and "clear". Article is "be writen" (= 書かれます) and something (article or picture) is "put/be on" or "appear". Right?
