ANOTHER where to start thread

Postby aaronjdelaney6514 » February 3rd, 2013 12:46 pm

HI all,

I've just signed up and thought i'd start reading the forums for some advice on where to start. Seems to be a lot of people confused about where to start and asking the same question. Lots have mentioned a good place to start is the Nohongo Dojou but none of the Jpod staff have confirmed this. Newbie S2 --> Newbie S3 --> Beginner S4 --> Beginner S5 --> Beginner S6 --> Lower Intermediate S6

I understand very basic japanese but i'm happy to start at the newbie series. I'm really keep to learn to speak and not to worried about reading writing at the moment( i can ready hiragana and Kata though) I want to learn conversational japanese FAST so i'm looking for advice for a good path to follow.

My plan was to

1. listen to audio
2. read notes
3. Apply vocab/sentences learned in conversation (my friend speaks japanese)
4. learn flash cards of the top 100 words, then 200 etc

Is the nihogo dojou series enough to learn to speak japanese or should i be looking at other lessons too?

WHy are there so many difference series??

Thanks in advanced. :) I'm really liking the few lessons i've listened to so far

Hi Aaron,
I think that the course you mentioned is a great one: Newbie S2 --> Newbie S3 --> Beginner S4 --> Beginner S5 --> Beginner S6 --> Lower Intermediate S6

These series are designed to help you understand and use conversational Japanese, and at the same time provide a strong foundation for learning grammar.

Your study plan is also a good one!
I would recommend also using the Basic or Premium study checklist as a guide for the steps to follow for each lesson:

Yeah, just definitely keep at it and you can do things like add the vocabulary you learn (or grammar notes) to something like Anki.

Definitely don't bother with writing stuff by hand yet, but you'll want to get used to kana characters so you can type stuff in your word processor or any other programs you'll be using to augment your listening lessons.
