Super Beginner Here!

Postby jamesbrad911707 » December 2nd, 2012 8:54 am

Ko'n'nichiwa gozaimasu!
Hello!

I'm new here around these parts (obviously :P) Just have a quick question: During the flashcard review sessions I noticed there are some words written in a different form of Japanese than the one used in the lesson, why is that AND what form is the writing? The cards say "with Romaji and Kana". I'm only aware of Romaji right now.

The word I'm asking about specifically is "saiaku" (最悪) & (さいあく). This really threw me off during my study session when the flashcard only read "最悪" which I was not aware of :[ But I can see the purpose of doing so. Knowledge is power!

Arigatou gozaimasu! Thank you very much!

おはよう、 ブラッドさん。 ようこそにJPod101.
Morning, Brad. Welcome to JPod101.

If you haven't done so already, check out this link: http://www.japanesepod101.com/write-japanese/
It talks about the three different writing systems that are used in the Japanese language, excluding romaji, which are ひらがな(hiragana)、カタカナ(katakana)、and 漢字(kanji). Just about every lesson contains pdf lesson notes and additional vocabulary, review, and study links. As for the discrepancies you mentioned, maybe you can let the staff know which lesson it is so they can decided whether it needs revision or not. It could be that your answer lies within those additional learning tools.

Hope this answered your question, and if not, feel free to ask once more. The staff and other members around here seem nice and helpful.

がんばって!
Good luck/do your best!

Brad-san, ウェズsan,
kon'nichiwa! :D
ウェズsan, thank you very much for your help and lovely comment!
Brad-san, Wes-san has already replied to your question and, like he wrote, please feel free to ask us any time!

On a separate note, just little advice to both...
Brad-san, we don't use "gozaimasu" for "kon'nichiwa"; so just "kon'nichiwa" is fine
ウェズsan, "welcome to JPod101" is "JPod101 に ようこそ"
