Question about lesson review

I am an absolute beginner. I am going through the flashcards to review what I am learning. For the Listening Comprehension part am I suppose to know the meaning of the word(which I do), the Romaji spelling(which I can do most times) and the Kana spelling(yeah um, not so much)? Since I have not gotten to the Kana lessons yet I do not know how much of it I am supposed to know. I have been able to pick up a few word only recognizing them when I see them. But I am not able to write them from scratch. Please advise me on how much I should be getting. I do not want to move on in lessons if I am skipping something I should have down.

I'm not sure what advice others would give, I am new to studying Japanese and what I am doing is learning the hiragana and katakana first, I am using the kana videos combined with this http://kana101.com/learn-hiragana free course (I personally found it easier to do hiragana first and am just about to start on katakana).

The reasons I think, personally, you should learn the kana first are:

You can get rid of the romaji on the flashcards - there are thoughts that romaji could be detrimental once you get further into your studies teaching incorrect pronunciation.

As you learn the hiragana you learn how to pronounce Japanese correctly.

You can reinforce what you have learnt by using the kana script in the audio lessons, once you can read it.

Those are jut my personal thoughts on the question, hope it helps
