Re: This time: something that requires creativity...?

前編
中編
後編1
後編2
最終編

There's kind of an odd thing going on here as it is, seeing as 前・中・後 (and their cousins 上・中・下, which I expect originated in China. It makes sense if you consider that reading was traditionally done top-to-bottom, and that Japan got its written system from them) tend to be used for sets of 2 or 3, not 5. Personally I'd go for something like "Volume I," "Volume II," "Volume III, Part 1," "Volume III, Part 2" and "The Conclusion" or "Concluding Volume." Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to inform the reader that is so elegantly concise as 最終編, but it still gets the message across. At any rate, that's my stylistic offering.

What does 嫌た mean and how is it pronounced?

I'm not too familiar with this, but it seems to be used exactly the same way as いや, so I'd wager it's some colloquialism of いやだ(から)。Somehow applying the reading from きら(う) just sounds wrong.

That's my take!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Psy. Consider this solved.

New Question
I don't really understand this piece of dialogue between a captain and his mate:

Code: Select All

Captain:
これで改めて
食糧と燃料をもらいにいける

Mate:
。。。。いまさら
くれるとは
思えないっス
けどね

Captain:
そんなことが通るか!!
困ってる
者がいたら
助けるのが
海の上での
ルールだ!!

Mate:
それこそ
通らないん
じゃないっス
か?

This is how the text appears in the speech bubbles.
Context is, that the captain is apparently evil, escaped from captivity, and now just got his evil plan foiled.

My non-literal translation would be something like:

Code: Select All

Captain:
Don't renew our food and fuel supplies. (???)

Mate:
....I think it's a little too late for that, sir.

Captain:
How could you miss that!? (???)
Helping someone who's in trouble is a rule of the sea!!

Mate:
I didn't really miss that, did I?  (???)

The (???) are behind the parts where I'm very unsure.

Please help me understand, if you can.
Thanks in advance.

Code: Select All

Captain:
これで改めて食糧と燃料をもらいにいけるな
We can go get some more food and fuel with this, huh?

Mate:
。。。。いまさらくれるとは思えないっスけどね
I don't think they'll give us anything now, though.

Captain:
そんなことが通るか!!困ってる者がいたら
助けるのが海の上でのルールだ!!
You think that's acceptable? Helping someone
who's in trouble is a rule of the sea!!

Mate:
それこそ通らないんじゃないっスか?
Isn't that more the kind of idea that won't be accepted?

The な is a tag question, like ね, not the negative imperative form.

通る can mean 'to pass, be accepted, recognised (of an idea or opinion)', or something like 'to make logical sense'. I'm not sure what the best English is, but you should be able to get the idea.

Wow, now I understand what they're talking about.

I thought the な made more sense as tag question, but I also assumed that the stadard form + な is usually the negative imperative form, and that they would've made it んだな , if they meant it as tag question.

Thank you very much! Consider this issue solved.

How would you translate this?

Postby chilla40001624 » November 24th, 2011 8:31 pm

How would you translate this?

憧れの女性なのに

It's the title of a short story I've read.
I've already looked into dictionaries/etc. and I would translate it as "Woman I long for". Would that be accurate? I'm not entirely sure, which is why I'm asking this. The story contains, well, a guy who has a crush on a woman.
Thanks for reading.

The implication with なのに is that something totally goes wrong, but I'll still give you a ○ for the interpretation.

... since you've read it, does something go wrong?

Well, I guess you could say that something does go kinda wrong.
But how would you carry that into the title?

It's actually not that important anymore, but thank you very much anyway, Psy. I'm still glad I got an explanation.
I was actually about to post another question about a short phrase I read, but I totally forgot what it was and where I read it. >_<

On a sidenote: I'm not sure, since I'm not familiar with this, but would I be right, if I assumed that the alternative to the ○ would have been an x? :)

Yup! The Japanese terms are まる(○)and ばつ(×). As for the title, I guess you could go with something literal like "Even though I loved her,' but that's just a matter of style.

Thanks once again.

I remembered the other thing I was going to ask:
In the last chapter of a story, it says at the end:

もうちょっと続く・・・

What does this mean?
Now I'm aware what each word means, but I can't figure out whether this means that the story is just on hiatus and will continue later or whether this is the end. The story itself is extremely open to a continuation, but the author has started writing other new stories after this one.

By the way, previous chapters always ended with つづく.
