A little translation help

Postby JustGenny6110 » August 6th, 2011 1:14 pm

I just started learning Japanese, I want to be able to write using Kanji so I started with Hiragana. last night I decided to try my hand at taking English words translating them online to Japanese and then writing the pronunciation given in Hiragana. I got three words in and got stuck :( I'm trying to write the sentence, "Each family group lives within a fairly small area." so far I have "Sorezore kazoku guruugu" does that look correct so far? I hit a snag when I came to the word lives, it doesn't exist in the Japanese language. I'm pretty sure live would work but when I looked it up I got multiple results so what what would I use. (Please don't write in kana, kanji, or romanji)
Arigatou in advance

You asked this question almost two months ago so I don't know if you're still interested in a reply.

It generally isn't a good idea to try to learn by translating from English. This is because there are a lot of different ways to translate a sentence to Japanese in many instances, both wrong ways and right ways. You're likely to get stuck pretty easily trying to figure that out.

However, the basic word for living in a place is 住む(sumu).

Well, that certainly makes it more challenging! But I think I can express the word "sumu" through the medium of interpretative dance.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be mean, but that remark was funny to me.
