What does it mean when someone says "watari"?

I was watching Detective Conan, and Conan had just bugged a car.
When the car drove away he exclaimed "watari!" and the subtitles said "Bingo!". (You can never trust subtitles, though.)
I assume it's just an expression that refers the the Japanese game Go, but I'm not sure.
If so, then it would be a similar saying to "Bingo!", "Checkmate!", etc, correct?

Sorry if this is a stupid question...

Yes, I think it is Atari from Go.

It's more like "check" than "checkmate" as you haven't won the game yet. So "bingo" is a good translation in this situation. "Gothca" might work as well.
