ことがある??

Hey, please help with this grammar problem.

I know about the '(past form verb)こどがあります' expression which means I have done so-and-so, I have had the experience of so-and-so.

For example,
お酒を飲んだことがあります。
I have drank o-sake (before).

But now I'm encountering sentences where the verb is in its present form - what does this mean?

When the present tense is used before ことがある, it means "(I) sometimes do [verb]". I've also seen it translated "as there times when..." (This might actually be a better translation, because usually when you talk about sometimes doing something you use ときどき or a similar expression)

For example (from jgram):
わたしの家では父が夕食を作ることがある。
In my household, there are times when dad makes dinner.
