Meaing of 日和

Postby edlo » February 2nd, 2010 5:48 pm

Hello everyone,

I came across these words with 日和:

東京日和, 貓びより,冬日和, etc

Rikaichan says 日和 means "weather". But it just doesn't make any sense to me, Tokyo weather?! Cats weather?! Winter weather?!

Could anyone please help me to understand this?

Many thanks :)

Edward

Heh. There was a single called Tokyo Weather.
I thought Tokyo Weather and Winter Weather sounded all right, anyways. =P

But that Neko Biyori is a magazine and I've seen it translated as 'A Perfect Day for Cats'. =) Furthermore, several places translated similar titles to 'A Perfect Day for [thing]'. E.g., A Perfect Day for Love Letters (恋文びより). Having said that, there's a book called Hitori Biyori and that's translated as both 'Being Alone' and 'A Good Day to Be Alone/For Being Alone'.'

Hope that helps!

You hit the nail on the head. Here's a Japanese definition to further clarify, if you need it:
晴れたよい天気。晴天。また、なにかをするのに、ちょうどよい天気。

Thank you jazzbeans-san, this 'A Perfect Day for [thing]' does help a lot :)

Also thanks for the other examples, I think I have a better understand of the word 日和 now.
