(止める)やめる means to stop something or to stop doing something.

立ち止まる comes from 立つ(たつ)which means to stand, and 止まる(とまる) which means to stop moving. Looking up the specific meaning in a Japanese dictionary, it means someone stops walking.

That's a simple explanation anyway.
