I'm also interested to learn what the rules are for replacing letters that aren't in Japanese...are you basing the translation off something?

The translation gets based off of the closest available sound. For example, the r sound in Japanese is really an l/d combination, which approximates English r. So the letters　ラリルレロ (ra, ri, ru, re, ro) are used for any English r or l sounds.

The same thing with the English v. The closest thing are the b consonants (バビブベボ, ba, bi, bu, be, bo - the h row with the tenten added) though I have seen the wa with a tenten to make v sounds too.

I'd love to get some help with finding a suitable Japanese Kanji name that has the same or atleast as close as possible, meaning as my English name (see below). I have a huge issue with using the Katakana form of Jonathan (Jonasan/ジョナサン), due to the fact it ends in 'san' (which is usually an honorific meaning 'Mr.'). I also know my Japanese friends struggle with calling me 'Jonasan-san', and the only other viable option is letting them call me 'Jona' or 'Jono'. Now I don't mind being called 'Jono', as that's the nickname most of my non-Japanese friends use, however I'm very interested in trying to find a Japanese Kanji equivelent of atleast (if someone can do my full name, I'll be even more grateful) my first name, which translates from the original Hebrew version as 'Yahweh (God) has given' or 'Gift of God'.

I originally attempted to translate my actual English name to Japanese (ジョナサン エドワード ギバード) as you also may see above, although I'm not too sure on the accuracy. My christian/first name 'Jonathan' comes from Hebrew, originally spelt 'Yonatan', & means, "Yahweh (God) has given". My middle name 'Edward' comes from Old English, originally spelt 'Ēadweard', is from my Grandpa's name, & means "happy/prosperous guard". My surname 'Gibbard' comes from Old German, originally spelt 'Gebhardt', & is thought to refer to the Hebrew name 'Gabriel', which means, "God is my strong man/hero".

The name you came up with in katakana, ジョナサン エドワード ギバード, is perfect! I also think that using either Jono or Jon as a nickname would make it easier to say in Japanese Unfortunately I can't come up with any advice for finding a Japanese name that has the same meaning as your original name.
