Polite Speech Help please

Postby Chronitsch » November 16th, 2009 9:32 pm

Hi there:

I have quite some problems with 敬語 尊敬語 + the form when speaking about the own group to someone higher (kenshogo?)

Biggest 2 problems

when do I use お~になる and when ご~になる
when do I use the Kanji for go and when not (御)

another big problem

when do i use the above used forms and when this -られる Form (I know its the same form as potential and passive)

and than
when to use お~になる and ご~になる or just なさる
is the first two with verbs and the last one just when something end with する?

And how many courses are there on jpod101? I think I heard 3 till now, but those questions still remain ^^

お will always be used with masu-stems of verbs. When it comes to nouns, it depends entirely on the word itself. There's supposedly some sort of relation to ご with Sino-Japanese words, but since you can't always identify them, you just have to learn them on a case-by-case basis.

As for the kanji 御, it's read both お and ご, so you have to decide the reading the same way you would when deciding whether to use お or ご.

As for なさる and られる, and comparing the different expressions, I don't think there's a whole lot of difference in terms of politeness if you're using high-level 尊敬語. There just seemed to be trends, which I'm not 100% familiar with. Certainly, though, なさる is used in place of する where する would be used on its own, e.g. 何にする?, どうした?, etc. You might want to try googling some expressions to see the kind of sentences that come up.

=======================
お~になります (Group 1/2) verbs generally having 1 kanji+1 hiragana (option)
ご~になります (Group 3) verbs generally having 2 kanjis

Note that there are some special verbs.
Can refer to some slides which i have created.

It's actually not much of a difference. I think the ~られる form is more used when you are talking to a 3rd party about another person. E.g

A:「田中先生はもう帰られましたか」
B:「はい。もう帰られました」

In this case, 田中先生 isn't around.

->Have answered your questions above.
