Help with explaining "how I get to uni"

Postby desdinova » October 18th, 2009 5:39 am

If someone asks me how I get to university how do I say "I catch a bus, then I walk for about 20 minutes"? I know how to say "I go by bus", and "I walk for about 20 minutes" but in terms of putting it all together I'm a bit lost.

バス で いきます。それから とほ で 二十ぷん ぐらい です
Thats about as close as I can get at the moment but I'm sure its not right.

Never mind I should be using soshite (そして)

Ps: what the hell happened to my hiragana In my last messag? I'm using the default microsoft Japanese language bar

edit: Ok now it seems to be showing up as normal for me, At first all my hiragana was replaced by nonsense symbols

I think you see those symbols only when you post a reply, then the message is correct when you watch the thread normally!

My Japanese is still pretty bad, but I will try to help you...

Your sentence
バス で いきます。それから とほ で 二十ぷん ぐらい です

My sentence
バス で いって 二十ぷん ぐらい あるきます

I didn't know the word とほ...
I think that using the verb あるく (to walk) can make things easier, if you want to say for how much time you walk! :)
And I would connect the two sentences putting the first verb in the te form. It sounds more natural, I think. With そして you add something that pops up to your mind, I think.
But you know perfectly what is the routine to go to だいがく... :)

Please correct me, if I said anything wrong.

You can simplify it a lot with something like 大学まではバス(に)20分と徒歩(で)10分です. Particles are optional, and you can replace です with がかかります for 'it takes' (the first version is like 'it is 20mins by bus...').
