Particle Question- Help!

Postby stevesayskanpai » June 9th, 2009 12:39 pm

In this question, is the bolded particle wrong?

そこ右折すると、右側に小さい公園がある。

Shouldn't it be に not を、as it is over there where you make the right hand turn?

Thanks for your help!

Nope! を can also be used to indicate that you're passing through somewhere, e.g. 公園を歩いていこう "let's take a walk in [through] the park." In this case, you're turning through an area. You also use を instead of に when you're exiting a place, e.g. 大学を出る "to leave [graduate] university." Kind of weird but that's how it is!
