がいい - (verb) ga ii...

Postby HelixSundown » June 7th, 2009 2:53 pm

I see/hear this structure rather frequently; (Verb) + ga ii. 来るがいい, 待つがいい, that kind of thing. However, I can't seem to find anything about it. JPod101 lessons are extremely confusing to search these days. -_-

The best I can make of this is that it's like "verb-te form + mo ii," except instead of being a question, it's an affirmation. たとえば, "来るがいい", "you can come." Am I on the right track here?

While I've never read anything about it, it's always been my assumption (through context) that it's just するのがいい without the の, for laziness sake.

Also, the affirmation of て(も)いい is also て(も)いい.

I don't think I've read anything about it either, but as far as I'm aware it's a stronger version of ~た方がいい. I think it might be a slightly older-sounding expression. I've heard it used with よい instead of いい. I saw it recently when I was reading Detroit Metal City, and it was used by Krauser, so if you're familiar with that series, you can imagine the kind of nuance it has.

待つがいい = 待ちなさい/待っていなさい
来るがいい = 来なさい

verb(dictionary form) + がいい。 = imperative form or advisory in the old-fashined phase.

I'll add my understanding that it carries the nuance of 勝手にしろ. In addition to the imperative, it also makes a very strong admonishment. Not the least bit polite.
