Translation Request - Help!

Postby stevesayskanpai » May 10th, 2009 7:51 am

'm writing to an ex-colleague in Japan about the fortunes of my favourite baseball team, and am finding it really hard to phrase what I want to say well.

Any help- stabs at translation- are extremely welcome!

Up until now the Tigers have been very dissapointing haven't they. Kanemoto has played to his usual high standard, and Toritani has played well, but other batters have been disappointing- particularly Mench who has been useless! I also don't think that Mayumi Kantoku's decision-making has been good, in particular when to bring in the relief pitchers. I hope things will improve soon, but this weekend we have already lost two games away to the Baystars!

So frustrating not being able to write this in Japanese, and the Edict dictionary is fairly useless for finding the kind of words that people would use naturally. Anyway like I said if anyone wants to help me translate this into Japanaese I'd be very grateful!

I'm in no sense an expert and would take my translation with a grain of salt, but this is what I came up with. Might be a good idea to wait for a second opinion.

btw, alc.co.jp is really useful for English -> Japanese translations.

今までタイガーズは本当にがっかりだよね。金本はいつものレベルで、谷本も良くやっているが、他の打者は案外に、特にメンチは役立たず。そして、まゆみ監督の意思決定もあまりよくないと思う。特にリリーフピッチャーの使い方。もうすぐ好転するように願っているが、今週末はもうベースターズに二回も負けてしまった!

I think the translation looks good! It's concise and conveys the intended meaning of the original :D

And I agree, alc.co.jp is a great resource!

There isn't one, but it's a large dictionary with loads of example sentences, so you can search for phrases and get natural translations. For example, earlier I searched for 'hold a service' and 'in mourning'. It'd be hard to look up such things with a simple EDICT dictionary. I use the iPod version all the time for English > Japanese lookups.
