How to read PDF files with japanese character in IPod Touch?

Postby sunshine813 » May 6th, 2009 3:42 pm

How to read PDF files with japanese character in IPod Touch? I've downloaded all my PDF files via MyFeed and wonder if I could open them in Ipod Touch?

Also, as these PDF files contain japanese characters, is there any particular application required to read them?

Thanks in advance.

cheers,

I can see all the earlier lessons on my iPod, but not the later ones! How come?

Also, I recently selected My Feed to send to iTunes, hoping this would help, but: nada!!
I'd appreciate some advice about this. Thanks!

Well, I don't own and iPod Touch  but I do own a mac and the same problem is present there. Using Lite versions of the PDF files might help. I know it helps using them on the computer and since the software that reads them is produced by the same company... Let us know if it worked. I am fairly curious about that issue. Especially since I would like to get one of those shiny things

Hi Liz,

May I know which application you are using to read these PDF files with japanese characters?

Hi Liz,

Hi Shamanana!
I love your name! I use Acrobat Reader to see PDF files on my computer. But, that's not my problem. My problem is: I used to be able to see the Lesson Notes on my iPod, but now I can't see the lesson notes for the newer lessons on my iPod. I am using MyFeed to download the podcasts through iTunes.

Thanks for your concern!

Thank you :D

I am aware that for viewing PDF files Acrobat works for both Windows and Mac OS based computers. But the software that Apple includes on their computers is not capable of handling certain types of PDF files (not at the moment at least). To make it easier for the mac community that doesn't use Acrobat for various reasons Jpod staff kindly supplies the Lite version of each PDF file, like for example the most recent "Video #32 - Video Vocab Lesson # 10" has both regular Lesson Notes (viewable with Acrobat only) and Lesson Notes Lite (Acrobat not needed).
Now, why am I explaining all this stuff? Because the older files that your iPod can open are like those Lesson Notes Lite while the new files are the new regular Notes that offer more, but are also more complex... and since Apple is also manufacturing iPods, the same software is (or isn't in case of Acrobat Reader) included, which would then explain why you are not able to view the new PDF files.

Which brings me to the next question.... have you tried opening the Lesson Notes Lite on your iPod? I am really just being curious about iPod Touch limitations... and I really want that thing :(

Hi, again!
Thanks for your note. But, really, I don't think my iPod would show the PDF files. I think it would show "the text", as it did in the past. I will try your suggestions, though, Thanks, again!

By the way, I don't have a problem seeing the PDF files on my Mac computer. But, I remember that I had to change the way they are viewed when they changed things at JPOD. Instead of opening up in the browser, they now have to be downloaded to my computer. I don't really like that very much because it clutters up my desk top. But, it works fine and I can read the kanji and hiragana. Well, I can SEE them, maybe not READ all of them, haahaha!

Here I go again...
I don't know which browser you are using on your mac, but for viewing jpod pdf lessons inside your browser Safari works miracles. I wish it was Camino but... can't have it all now, can we. No need to download them or anything... Just checked now cause you got me worried there for a moment

I am pretty sure you can view your lessons on a mac if you are using Acrobat Reader... I just don't like that humongous pile of... on my beautiful (if somewhat old) PB.

By the way... check out this link http://tinyurl.com/q6fzs3

Hi, again!
Well, I use Firefox because then I can use "Rikaichan!". So I don't want to use Safari. I guess you can't have everything at once. Thanks for telling me about Safari, though. . . I appreciate knowing that. . . maybe I can use Safari just for JPDO. . . hmmm. . . great idea!

Me again

I am still wondering though if those Lite files worked on your iPod Touch? It's kind of an important issue here... or so I think... :?: One of the main reasons I would go for an iPod touch in the first place... being expensive as it is...

lesson pdf's on ipod touch

Postby tricycle222 » June 18th, 2009 7:00 pm

This is a late reply to the question, but since I was looking through the comments I thought I would reply. The Lesson Notes Lite display on the ipod-touch when downloaded in Safari. But more importantly when you listen to the complete audio file the Romanji and English are overlaid on the screen for Newbie and Beginner lessons. For the other levels (upper level intermediate, lower level intermediate, audio blog, onomatopoeia) the kanji and kana are also on display. You may have to tap the screen for it to appear.

I use pdf's on my i-touch without any problems reading the Japanese characters.

If you have Wireless Internet, you can download an app called "File Sharing" that can store and view your pdf's ( and other files ) in whatever folder system you set up - very useful if you have lots of files.
