Unable to view new PDF format.

Postby kumakun » November 1st, 2008 11:37 pm

System: MacOS 10.4.11 (PowerPC G4)

I have tried both Safari and Firefox. I have installed latest version of Adobe as suggested in previous postings. Every PDF I download contains no text apart from the navigation (contents).

Please sort this out asap.

Solved PDF viewing problem for MacOS 10.4.11 (PowerPC)

Postby kumakun » November 2nd, 2008 9:56 am

I finally found a version of Adobe that works.

Selected Japanese version of 8.1.2 and can now view the PDFs.

However, the new PDFs also do not work on mobile devices, readers and the iPhone. It's a bit like having a website only work in IE, and not display in Safari or Firefox.

Downloading the latest Adobe reader or installing unnecessary additional fonts is not an option for some.

How many of us read the PDFs on the go?

I apologise for posting my issue on another thread.

I hope to see the latest PDFs republished soon.

carlton-san,

I am glad that the extra version of the PDFs work for you. We are doing our best to provide accessible content for everyone.

We would like to continue improving our PDFs and adding more features to our site. One feature is to add this new extra PDF to MyFeed, so that users have the option to download the Lesson Notes Lite PDF instead of the standard one.

Thank you for your patience, and your support.

New PDF format

Postby tricycle222 » November 22nd, 2008 8:41 pm

Because I started this thread, I feel as if I should add my latest thoughts. The addition of pdf lite (the lesson notes the way they were before the change) solves all of the problems. Now we can have our sushi and eat it too. If one wants to manipulate the pdf the larger Adobe version is available, if one wants to just read and view the more elegant font, which is not available in Adobe, on the the computer screen then the "lite'" version can be used. The support from JapanesePod101.com is tremendous. I have only been a subscriber for a couple of months, but I have already extended my yearly subscription by an extra year.

Hi!

I realize this is an old thread, but unfortunately it seems that the issue hasn't been resolved as yet... and it's mid-January 2009 already!

I was just going through Newbie's Style you lessons and Beginner's S4... Kanji Close Ups are fine but lesson notes is just a set of squares... And there are no Lesson Notes Lite available for those? Not that I see any.
Honestly, I don't want to download Adobe or install it on my computer. I had some issues with it in the past that forced me to reinstall Leopard... And I do have Preview already ... and Skim... which is even better... :) so

Like other people in this thread already mentioned.... the old pdf files were fine... and those Lite ones work great too :)

Pleeeeease and Thank you!

I just came across this thread after getting no reply to my email requests for help on this issue (a simple answer with a link to this forum would've been appreciated, guys).

*EDIT* 3/8 just realized I did get a reply, it went to my spam folder. Sorry JP101!

I've downloaded Adobe Reader and it displays everything fine, though really the Lesson Notes Lite is ample, and I'd prefer to have something that opens quickly and easily for quick reference. Maybe someday soon I'll try the added features of the full notes, but at the moment I don't really need anything more.

Don't want to sound like a whiner as JPod101 is one of my greatest finds of the past few years. Keep it up, and I hope these issues can get sorted out soon.

The Lite version though seems to solve all the problem, but the quality of the lite version is substandard on a Mac.

I hope Jpod101 can solve this issue, I have been reading very nice PDF since Jpod101 founded, the use of new PDF and a lite version seems to lower the elegance of it.

Hi there!

There has been no update for a quite some time regarding the pdf files that cannot be viewed without the installation of certain bloatware... Also, like someone mentioned, the same files cannot be viewed on mobile devices... iPhone...

Anything?

Hello Shamanana-san

Prior to Oct 24 all the lessons only had "Lesson Notes" without the "Lesson Notes Lite" versions. The Lesson Notes PDFs prior to Oct 24 should all work fine with Mac's Preview, Adobe Reader, and other PDF reader software - because these PDFs were generated using a different technology than the current PDFs are.

Any lesson after Oct 24 should have both the Lesson Notes and Lesson Notes Lite PDFs - the Lite versions will work with all readers (except screen reading software for accessibility).

I reviewed the Beginner Series Season 4 and found that this lesson dated Oct 21st 2008 does not have the Lesson Notes Lite - because the Lesson Notes PDF is usable:

beginner-lesson-s4-16-read-learn-and-speak-combining-verbs-in-japanese-2

While this lesson dated Oct 28th 2008 does have both PDFs:

http://www.japanesepod101.com/2008/10/2 ... -to-bring/

If by chance any of the older lessons were regenerated using the new software - but we forgot to attach the Lesson Notes Lite version  - please let us know the exact lesson and we will fix it promptly. We are working hard on building an inventory checklist of the older lessons - but much of our time is focused on new lessons (so it's taking us a while).

Thank you!
Charles

Is there anyway to bring back the old PDF format.

The new lite version really looks ugly on a Mac!!!
