I have not been able to get the grammar bank search to work for a while now, is it my end?

When you enter in a word and click Go, does it just come up blank? Does it say "No Grammar Items Found"?

Japanese words come up ok now. English words like 'what' and 'this' say no grammar items found. Is that right?

You're not finding them because there aren't any entries called "what" or "this". The grammar bank is more for japanese expressions that are hard to translate into English.

If you're looking to look up the Japanese equivalent of something perhaps try the word dictionary:
