Two Stupidly Simple Questions

1. How do you say "Geoff said that Linda wants to come to Seoul"

is it... ＧｅｏｆｆはＬｉｎｄａがソウルに来たいと言いました？　are the particles right?

2. How do you sad "It's not Change Ring, it's Changeling"

is it...Change Ring じゃないよ、Changling です

or is it...Changeling じゃなくて、Changling ですよ。

which is more natural?

1. ＧｅｏｆｆはＬｉｎｄａがソウルに来たがっていると言っていました。
Note that -たい (I want to~) becomes たがる／たがっている when you're talking about someone else (he/she wants to~). You can check out Intermediate Lesson #8 for more info on it!

2. Your second choice: Changeling じゃなくて、Changling ですよ。 is more natural.

Jessi, I think his sentence is ok how it is because he is using the quotation with to iimashita. If He wasnt quoting her then he would need to use the tagaru form or kitai to omottemasu ?? This would also show her desire to come. Actually I think it sounds kind of strange to say ikitagaru with the quote of to itta how you have it. Note here that we are using the kitai here because the point of view is not from the girl in soul but whatever that guys name is. because. the girl in soul would not say she want to kitai to another location right. Jessi please let me know if I am off here because this is confusing for me to. but my inclination is the sentence is ok how it is.

He isn't quoting Linda. He's saying what Geoff said Linda wants to do. Since Geoff is the one who said it, but Linda is the one who desired it, he needs to speak of her desire with たがる, and so do you. The fact that 来る is used instead of 行く just indicates that the person being quoted (Geoff) is currently in Seoul.

I think usually Mieth would be right, because as far as I'm aware たい about a third person is fine in an embedded clause, like a quote, そう, らしい, etc. Here, though, somebody's quoting a guy quoting a girl, so I don't really know what the rules are

It's likely Geoff would have said something like「Lindaはソウルへ来たがってる」, so if it was a direct quote Jessi's version would make sense, right? と言う doesn't require a direct quote though, does it? So I guess I don't really know what the answer is... just thought I'd throw this into the mix

It isn't, though. No one's quoting Linda; you're not saying "Geoff said Linda said." The sentence just expresses something Geoff said. If Geoff WAS quoting Linda, then たい would be fine, but he isn't. He's just saying what she wants to do.

For the record, I did run it by a native speaker before posting it. If you want I can have it double checked (I admit I had to think about the sentence itself for a moment), but, like QuackingShoe said, Geoff isn't quoting Linda, just saying what she wants to do. But I can check!

I wasn't suggesting it was wrong, I was just wondering if both were okay. Now that I think of it in more literally terms "Geoff said Linda is showing signs of wanting to come to Seoul", it's pretty straightforward. I was thinking of "embedded clauses" as an exception, since I remember that line from my dictionary, rather than what the individual parts actually mean I hope I haven't unnecessarily confused Steve. Probably just best to ignore my posts

Not at all- thats why I asked! It seemed "stupidly simple" to me, and that I was missing something, but actually it does take some thinking about which is why I wanted to check it out.
