kore wa......kono um.....kore ....

I'm having trouble figuring out how to use the KORE and KONO (and KOKO) words....

I understand the difference between KO, SO, A, DO, etc...

KORE = this
SORE = that (close)
ARE = that (far)
DARE = which


BUT....

how do i know whether to say

KORE WA HON DESU (This is a book)
or
KONO WA HON DESU (This is a book....??)

((and i'm also getting confused if it could be KOKO WA HON DESU.......but i'm thinking "KOKO" is only for places, which is why you say KOKO NI?))

kore wa hon desu = this is a book
kore wa hon desu ka= is this a book?

kono/sono/ano must attach directly to a noun

kono hon wa omoshiroi desu = THIS BOOK is interesting
kono hon wa watashi no desu = THIS BOOK is mine
sono hon wa watashi no desu=that book(near you) is mine

koko=here soko=there
A-watashi no hon wa doko desu ka? =where is my book?
B- koko desu ! = it's here!

Just so you know, words like kore, sore and are can be conjugated in many, many different ways. Take "kore" for example:

kore = this, subject
kono + noun = this
kocchi = this way
koyou = like this
konnani = this much
kochira = this, polite, respectiful

I am sure there's others, I just can't recall at the moment. :p

Anyways, you get the idea I hope.

Kore, sore, are, dore are all demonstrative pronouns, and can be used by themselves. Kono, sono, ano, dono are demonstrative adjectives, which modify nouns, and since they are dependent, they can't be used by themselves.

Basically, use the -re ending where you could use any other noun, and use the -no ending when you need to refer to this/that/which noun.

Kore wa ii kuruma da.
This is a good car.
Ii kuruma wa kore da.
The good car is this (one).
Kono kurama wa ii.
This car is good.
