"At the top" is: うえに so if you wanted to say at the top of X you'd write Xのうえに. Same goes for "at the bottom" which is したに.

ひだりに means "on the left" みぎに means "on the right".

"In the foreground" is: ぜんぽうにあります. If you wanted to say "the x in the foreground" you would say ”ぜんぽうにあるX”.

"Background" is a little difficult because there are different words you can use depending on context see: http://tinyurl.com/b34oj7

みぎうえすみ means "in the top right hand corner". ひだりうえすみ means "in the top left hand corner". You can use した in place of うえ in these sentences to mean "in the bottom left/right hand corner".

i think maybe となり (tonari) is also useful in these situations. like maybe there's someone you know but the person next to him is someone you don't know... then it could be something like Xさんのとなりはだれ? (who's the person next to Mr. X?)

Thanks a lot!
I guess I can use 背景に or more generally バックに for "in the background."

Actually, I've also found フォアグラウンド for foreground and バックグラウンド for background, so I guess I can use these and still be understood by most Japanese people.

in the foreground : 手前(てまえ)に, 前方(ぜんぽう)に
in the background : 後(うし)ろに, 背(せ)にして,背景(はいけい)に, バックに
